It Must Be the Timing Belt | snippet
00:00 / 02:37

An experimental short film by Daniël Siegersma about the bureaucracy of complex inheritance tax after a loved one dies. The actors, who did not learn the script, inhabit the role more and more over time to depict the absurdity of rereading those difficult letters under the cloak of grief, slowly trying to understand what they mean. After the movie’s edit, I locked myself up, recording myself playing multiple instruments to convey a feeling of pressure, exhaustion and isolation.

Buurvrouw, Fietsenmaker, Sportschooljuf - intro

A whimsical Dutch documentary by Patsy Kroonenburg in which she interviews her upstairs neighbour, bike repairer and the fitness instructor to get to know them better. Everyone has these people in their lives that are actually quite close to you, but you don’t necessarily get to know. This was an interesting composing process, in which I created a lot of material at home in Glasgow, and Ard Kok created the final soundtrack in Utrecht around my material.

BrainTwistastix – AFTERMOVIE | Isidor ten Hooven

This music-theatre show was a teleshopping commercial losing track of itself. The BrainTwistastix is a device that fights the thoughts in your busy brain, so you can be more present in the moment without having to think about it. The piece contained irony, surrealism, and a dash of dark reality and was realised thanks to a group of collaborators and performers, whose creative contributions have been invaluable. Two years later, the recordings have been converted into a conceptual EP, which you can find under Music.

A music-theatre show by my collective I. Straus, specifically written for Café Theatre Festival Utrecht, which converted the city’s pubs and bars into temporary theatres for the weekend. Reinventing the words and music from I. Straus’ EP, released the year before, we created a punk mass, reflecting on morality, primitive drifts and the sober basics of life.

I. Straus (Live) - Rachmaninov: Three Russian Songs, No. 3 "My Cheeks, So White, So Rosy!"

Video: Luuk ten Hoor, Leo van Heijningen (XPOZRS)

Before moving to the UK, I set up a collaborative group I. Straus. In 2019, we organised a fully self run event to celebrate the release of our EP Only Breakfast & Dinner (listen here). During this event we played a versatile program reaching from progressive and experimental punkrock to gritty arrangements of classical pieces by Schubert and Rachmaninoff. To create a unique feel to the concert, we set up our own stage, sound and lighting within an empty building that used to be an old train depot.

Waaihoofd

A theatre show full of dialogue, dance, songs and music. A show about cloudy brains with small big fears, about having knotted thoughts or just about being a giraffe. Most of all, a show filled with joyful stress reduction.

For this show I made arrangements of existing music and improvised soundscapes to enhance the mood of the scenes together with Paul van Laar. We used a little set up with bass, guitar, keys and a drum computer to accompany the most whimsical, funny and real show that was Waaihoofd.
